07/04/2020. Mexico: National Institute of Transparency, Access to Information and Protection of Personal Data (INAI): During emergencies, INAI is concerned that society has timely information and that personal data is protected.

The Commissioner President of INAI clarified that while the use of personal information may be understandable to control the spread of the virus, as was the case in Korea, where the geolocation of infected persons was key to stabilizing their situation, it is important to follow specific protocols on personal data protection.
He warned that, in the case of Mexico, geolocation can be used as long as the person authorizes or recognizes this possibility, so if there is a need to resort to this resource to contain the pandemic, the authorities must do so under specific protocols, channels and situations, which INAI should verify.
