25/02/2020. The European Council adopts a decision authorising the opening of negotiations with the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland for a new association agreement. The Decision states that the European Commission is authorised to open negotiations for a new Association Agreement. In addition, the Annex states that, in relation to data protection, the adoption by the EU of adequacy decisions, if the applicable conditions are met, should be a factor in promoting cooperation and exchange of information. Furthermore, the Annex underlines that the Commission will work towards an adequacy finding that will facilitate cooperation between the partners on law enforcement and judicial cooperation issues.

“The Council has adopted a clear and strong mandate for our negotiator, Michel Barnier. This confirms our readiness to offer an ambitious, wide-ranging and balanced partnership to the UK for the benefit of both sides. The EU is now ready to start negotiations. “
